An Airbnb alternative — for hosts, not guests
Most “Airbnb alternative” lists are written for travellers. This one’s for the host wondering if there’s a way to keep more of what you earn.
Search “Airbnb alternative” and almost everything that comes back is written for guests — other places to browse and book a stay. That’s not the question most hosts are actually asking. The real question is: is there a way to list my property that doesn’t hand 15–25% of every booking to a platform?
The honest answer is that swapping Airbnb for another marketplace won’t fix that — nearly every OTA charges in the same range. The real alternative isn’t another marketplace. It’s adding a channel you own alongside the marketplaces you already use.
Why switching marketplaces doesn’t help
Airbnb takes roughly 15.5% as a host-only fee. Booking.com averages around 15%, ranging up to 25%. MakeMyTrip and Goibibo commonly run 18–25%, more with visibility add-ons. The full breakdown is here — but the short version is: every major marketplace takes a similar cut, because they’re all solving the same problem for you (finding guests) and charging for it the same way.
Moving your listing from Airbnb to another OTA is a lateral move, not a fix. The commission follows you. What actually changes the number is a channel where guests book you directly — no marketplace in the middle at all.
What “alternative” should actually mean
Not a replacement marketplace. A second channel that runs alongside Airbnb, built for the guests who don’t need a marketplace to find you:
- Repeat guests who already stayed and would happily rebook if it were one tap away.
- Referrals — a past guest telling a friend, who then searches your property’s name, not “homestays near X.”
- Your own audience — Instagram followers, Google searchers, people who found you through word of mouth.
None of these guests need Airbnb to discover you — they already know who you are. Routing them through Airbnb anyway just means paying commission on a booking that would have come to you regardless.

| Approach | What it actually changes |
|---|---|
| Switch to another OTA | Commission stays roughly the same (15–25%). Same dependency, different logo. |
| List on multiple OTAs | Wider discovery, but you now pay commission on multiple platforms and need a channel manager to avoid double-bookings. |
| Add a direct booking website | Zero commission on bookings that come through it — repeat guests, referrals, your own audience. Airbnb stays for new-guest discovery. |
You don’t have to choose one
This isn’t Airbnb versus something else. It’s Airbnb plus a channel you own. Keep your Airbnb listing exactly as it is for what it’s genuinely good at — reaching people who’ve never heard of your property. Add a direct booking site for everyone else.
Rukiye Zara gives you both in one place: a booking website guests can use directly, synced with your Airbnb calendar so nothing double-books. Start free, and only pay once direct bookings are actually flowing.
I never left Airbnb — it still brings me guests who’d never have found me otherwise. What changed is that my repeat guests stopped going back through it. That’s the only part of the equation an “alternative” should actually change.Safiya — Founder, Rukiye Zara
